I find gloves make the pot holed roads smoother.
Also, I might fall off the bike - mind, I dispense with the helmet in the 2 days of summer we get here, but keep the gloves on

Ha! I keep my helmet on even with a sweaty forehead. I'll start off with gloves in case I come off but take them off when it's hot. I carry various length/thickness gloves in my rack bag and often change them mid ride.

I bought the Sugar Shorts mentioned above and they appear to be just the ticket. Took them on a ten mile ride today (in the rain!) and was very pleased. Just the right length and the padding was not intrusive.

I ordered the large and was shocked to find them too small! (I am medium on the high street and usually large in exercise wear, plus I measured myself and went by the style guide). So sent them back and got the extra large and these were a good fit. The woman in the shop was not surprised as this manufacturer is notorious for coming up very small (apparently). Extra large is the largest size they do and I'm only one stone over weight for my height so it would be tricky for someone who is bigger.

Thanks for everyone's help on this topic. I hope to be wearing these shorts regularly from next week when my office moves to cycling distance.

I bought the TLC longer short - Thanks @buggi for the recommendation, which is quite long, I may buy a different one later once I've seen how they wear but I wore them to Pilates last week as it was hot and sticky, and they felt comfortable, just need to try them out on the bike too.
