As long as I breathe, I attack.
I use shimano m520 MTB spd pedals on all my bikes, you can pick them up for £15 without cleats as i have fair bit of walking and prefer them for that over "road " cleats that sit on the outside of the shoe making it harder to walk .
Road pedals for the shoes you like generally ha've a triangular cleat , decathlon do these ...

Both systems have their merits and pitfalls , some say you get a bit more power transfer with the road pedals as thye have a bigger cleat but i have ridden with the smaller mtb spd for years , including on cycle club runs and i have never had a problem with them .

What do you mean by trainers? Shiny plastic shoes rather than shoes that look like normal shoes?

It does seem for most cycling shoes, you'll need a size bigger than your normal shoe size, some come up quite narrow too

Yeah exactly, more sports trainer than shoe. I'd only use them when I'm out for a ride as much of my riding is recreational and not commuting.

Can I just say...this is why I love this place after only a few months. So god damn HELPFUL!

Musa, thanks buddy, like the look of the pedals and trainers you posted. Vickster the £40 Shimano ebay trainers look decent...that'd be just under £80 for the pair.

Now comes the bit where I battle against my willpower and inevitably lose.

No problem Caimg, when I return home (London) I'ma shout you out for a ride..
but you can mix and match, if you can find the shoes and pedals cheaper take it to evans and get them under a price match. when i got my pedals came with cleats too. I was happy that day

if you dont want to break the bank ...have a look here

Hadn't even thought of Sports Direct...but I have a feeling they could be a bit pap. The description for them was written by an overexcited 10 year old which makes me a little bit wary

You can usually get the Shimano M520 spd's off a seller called absolutecycles on ebay for about £15
+1 for spd's instead of road shoes ( spd-sl )

Just to note, absolutecycles do not supply cleats with the pedals at that price (not that it was an issue for me)

spd you are locked to the pedal but can walk normally off the bike at cafe stops etc
spd-sl you are locked to the pedal but walk like you desperately need a s**t at cafe stops etc

pretty much that, double sided and walking in cleats bu as you mentioned its for recreational riding and not riding so I don't see how that will affect you

as rollinstok said, pain when in tescos and your clacking about i hate going down stairs side foot down
