There is one thing I have noticed my SPD don't seem to have any body around them compared to the Shimano A600
I get the feeling all the retailer is seeing is £ signs new shoes and pedals you don't need comes to a fair few £££. I bought a new road bike the other week and have double sided SPD pedals on it the same as my MTB
These are the ones I have. Might be better to stick with SPD but move to the A600 version as the have more support around the profile of the pedal.

I found the wider support better for me.
One good thing about spd is they dont really wear out like the plastic SPD SL cleats
