The cassette turns in the same way as the nut loosens but as you will see in a few minutes your hand is enough to stop the cassette from turning.

But if you can undo using your hands then Paul is right. You are not tightening the lock ring up to the recommended torque.

Video not working. You must have arms like Popeye and skin like an alligator if you can stop the cassette turning whilst undoing lockring.

My touring method is an old bit of rag twisted round the cassette nice and tight and with a bit of luck and skinned knuckles I can hold the cassette still enough to undo the locking nut.

I still think if you do the lock nut tight enough, you do need a chain whip......
