That'll be the hills. Down here, where it's flat and there are a good number of cycle commuters, there's not much chatting at the lights. But there's always one or two unfortunate enough to find they have me as a red light companion.

Happens here too, more so in Bloomington than say in Normal, or Peoria. Seems to be a local tradition or usage. Some cyclists talk in some places, others not so much. Chicago has a lot of talkative cyclists. So does Galena.

If I don't speak it's because I'm pretending to not be gasping for breath - I'm not from here, and it's a lot more effort to ride here than where I last rode regularly!
I nod at people going the other way though, but I notice not many nod back. Perhaps they're too busy scanning for potholes, which as you know are legally required to be every 4 yards within the city boundaries.
