No, no, you use what works for YOU, my post was merely to see if there was an option for ALL the colours and fonts to be determined by the user instead of being set by the forum, IYSWIM?

I have no idea what IYSWIM means LOL!

But I love your idea...
It would be so much easier for me - i'm currently having to highlight over texts to change the background from white.
I have two windows open, the one i'm redaing with the background higligthed & the one i'm writing in, so have to keep referring back to another window, by which time loads more posts have been made sometimes alreday saying what i've just written so I end up deleting my post LOL!
It takes ages & can be quite frustrating
I'm sure there are other who may have probelsm with certain colours or the size of fonts too
I will have my tinted glasses back soon & new filter should be here by end of week too, so I can return to normalness after taht

A colleague uses blue glasses to help her black-on-white thing, apparently they work pretty well but she gets the same sort of thoughtless comments that we see above.

Steady on. I had no way of knowing that and I did try to be polite.

Indeed not, which is why I said that the comment was thoughtless rather than aggressive or mickey-taking or whatever. You didn't think that there may be a reason for the chosen colour scheme and so you made your comment.

It wasn't meant to be a negative reflection on your post, Jez, but it's easy to act on our own view of the world without considering that there might be stuff going on that we don't see, that we don't consider.

Reading the sort of problems that funnymummy has and seeing her own solution helps me to broaden the way I'll read what others post and help me to be a bit less thoughtless myself. Although, in this specific example, the insights I've picked up from my colleague did already make me consider that some people use colour to do more than just making a break from the **ahem** norm.

Fair enough, but I think it's a bit unfair to expect someone to consider and research all the miriad possibilities of everything before asking a question. I must I'm surprised at myself for not considering it though as a great deal of people who work in such 'creative' industries as my own are often heavily dislexic. In fact I was tested as being slightly dislexic myself (do have some very slight reading problems and tend to read quite slowly), although not enough to qualify for a free computer when I started university.

I just thought that funnymummy had chosen that font and colour purely because she liked them aesthetically - this has come from experience at work where a lot of colleagues started using custom backgrounds, font colours etc once they discovered how to when we switched to using MS Outlook. It was hell and in the end management had to send out a memo telling people to stop doing it!

Sorry funnymummy!

Guess the best thing is if there is a way in the browser to change the fonts as you see them, but continue if it's best for you. I would just ask, though ... please not Comic Sans! ;)

You're right, and I've got the inside line because I've set up stuff so recently.

Maybe thoughtless could be read too strongly. I meant it to mean "not thoughtful" rather than "doltish" or "mindless". A different word (careless? unconscious? wayward? inadvertant? unconsidered?) would have been better as it would be less emotional.

 I quite like Comic Sans  but I can't generally be bothered to change things. Completely agree with you on the custom backgrounds, though. Nasty things.

Not at all, funny, that was down to my poor choice of words. Apologies for polluting your thread.

Back to the cycle paths...

I just find it so annoying when you see a group ahead (walkers or cyclists) blocking the whole path, they can see you coming, small child in front, towing a trailer behind, not speeding, just out for a gentle family day out. It wouldn't take any effort on their part to move over slightly, it takes a whole lot of effort to stop & restart a bike with a 10stone load on the back!

Say "Hello" or an equivalent loudly enough that they can hear, and early enough that they can easily move out of your way. See if you can ride such that you look like you're not going to stop - you're going slowly anyway - but make sure you can still cope if they're feeling deliberately miserable.

I don't really have problems in that situation, but I do let people know I'm there, and I'm fairly sure a tandem looks more intimidating than many bikes :-)

ROFL... thats depends on whose right & whoes left

Sorry if I was unclear, I'll put it another way, when I am cycling on a path I keep to my left hand side of the path, when I am walking on a path I walk on the opposite side, ie the right hand side of the path.
This is the convention on the roads as required to conform with the Highway Code.

So If I am cycling keeping to the left, that would mean you would be walking directly towards me as you'd be on the righthand side of your path..?

Yes, that is what the Highway Code tells us to do on the roads, and the system works equally well on paths, if everyone sticks to the code.

I've always assumed this is because then you are best able to see and anticipate the traffic that is passing closest to you.

Funnymummy, I'm afraid there are inconsiderate folk in all modes of transport, stick to your best idea of ettiquette and try to ignore the fools. Some of the people walking directly towards you MAY be following this rule, but I suspect many are just being ignorant.

Posted in Comic Sans just for devilment, and pink for your benefit....

i commute to work on the tow path, and i always cycle on the left, and hope other cyclists do the same. If i see another cyclist coming towards me and they're on their right (i.e. in my path) i'll hold my ground, keep my poker face and try and force them to move.

If they're are peds in the way, i'll move around them whereever they position themselves, as as outlined above they have RoW.
