It's always good to check the tyres, I usually find glass (that's Bristol for you) and often thorns and shards of metal, otherwise I don't take any action to repair the tyre, just use it until it becomes a puncture magnet.
The first tyres that have carried my bike more than 1000km are a pair of 23c continental gatorskins.
I run gators and i got maybe 4000 km out of the rear before it became a magnet, just changed it to the gator hardshell and hopefully it will last as long.
Conti 4000s on both of my bikes and I because I record the mileage for my good bike more accurately, I know they will have travelled over 4000km. I keep the pressure up to around 110 psi and only change them when I start to get punctures - did the change to new tyres last night.
