It's quality control. The thing is, with the cheap stuff, what's to know there could be a void in the resin under that nice shiny top weave?

You don't want bars snapping. This is a key safety component and the same applies to alloy bars. Cheap copies are just that.

There are fake alloy bars out there as well.

I wonder if Planet X, Ribble and countless other UK resellers of Chinese carbon do much R&D?

They will do as much R&D and QA as is necessary in order to give them enough confidence to sell, support and stand by the products they sell. There is too much exposure to their business and reputation if they didn't.

I'm not trying to be nice - I'm trying to be honest. Sorry if you are offended. The fact remains though that this is nothing to do with snobbery. I'm not interested in debating snobbery with you, but if you have any comments of safety, R&D, QA or batch testing, I'll happily get involved.
this post is about shangai carbon - if you want a discussion with anybody around safety, R&D, QA or beatch testing, then start your own thread and stop resorting to name calling in peoples threads, just because they have a different opinion to yours.............

if thats all you have joined this forum to do, then your not particularly adding anything of interest other than abusing people

Probably better if you just left it, to be honest. Talking of name calling, all you have done on this thread so far is accused people of being 'snobs', followed by picking an argument with me when I try to being the discussion back onto topic - so your hypocrisy is there for all to see. I really have no interest in talking to you, because you really have nothing of interest to say. You'll probably respond to this with more bluster, but I'll just leave it there.

Anyway, moving on..

My son has two carbon frames (road & track) - both chinese made, but both UK branded and sourced from reliable UK suppliers. In the case of the track frame, the frameset is available direct from China for about £200 less than I paid. I went with the UK supplier for two reasons: 1. because I assumed that if the supplier was happy to sell the frame and put his name to it, then it will have met his standards and 2. if something ever did go wrong with it, I have a UK company to deal with, not a Chinese one, with all of the potential inconveniences that would bring. To me, that was worth an extra £200.

Yes you are basically paying £200 for a UK warranty. In terms of R&D and QC etc very little if any over a reputable Chinese seller like Deng Fu or Carbon Zone. The R&D is pinched from the big brands and the QC is the Chinese manufacturer pumping out the items to the Chinese sellers and multiple resellers overseas. You might get the odd shark but it is not in the interests of the manufacturer or vendors where ever they are based to sell dangerous items.
All that said I am not that convinced by carbon bars wherever they come from.

You make a good point actually it is not anyone`s interest to have dodgy carbon for sale as bad news travels fast and it does not favour the big brands if there is suspect materials out there. Mind you some big brands have carbon failures from what I`ve seen. The question is if the cheap chinese carbon has the longvevity of the big branded stuff the I suppose I can only assume the higher cost is to cover their R&D ?

If you are a Chinese ebay seller with a bad rep, all you need to do is de-list from Ebay, open a new seller account and then carry on. In general, the level of risk - especially for things like bars, stems etc, where the forces are more focused and the failure more potentially catastrophic - is just too high to be confident about their use, I would have thought.

The actual value and benefit of carbon bars, saddles, etc, is marginal anyway, but that's another story.
