Years ago I gave first aid in an accident, and ended up inside the car supporting a patient's neck and maintaining an airway.

I was in the car when the roof was cut off to release the victim

Not a pleasant experience, and I suspect even less so when you are injured and shocked already

i was the "victim" in a demonstration at work many years ago .As cunobelin says its an awful experience when you know what coming and you are not starting to shock/already in shock. when the blanket type thinghy went over was one of the worst feelings i have experienced.

As mentioned, on my return from the Limousin to York last month I saw 2 accidents en route, one of which must have been extremely damaging to those involved, if not fatal. The other had clogged up a large district of Rouen and the ambulance was just arriving.

Over a 750 mile journey I am not surprised if I see accidents. On a trip out not long ago, on the autoroute, I saw a black BMW upside down on the wrong side of the crash barrier. It had certainly only recently arrived in that position and I am sure it was one of two cars I'd seen earlier close together and doing well over 100mph.

What was I to do? If I stopped from a speed of 75mph I would end up a long way beyond the scene and no one else was slowing because, they probably didn't notice the car which was not very visible at night on an unlit road, narrower and bendier than UK motorways. I decided to reach the next 'aire de repose' and phone emergency services. I never heard any more.

Just go on Youtube and look for Russia Car Crash Compilation if you want to see a few examples, there is somebody posting a new compilation every month now. Many Russian drivers must use dash cams; there is so much material. In almost every case it's clear that speed and lack of concentration are the causes. I've heard that Russia has the most dangerous roads in the world.

My Hungarian agent who learned to drive under the Soviet system, is the most frighteningly incompetent driver I know. To my knowledge she has had two accidents in which she left the road through inattention (mobile phone in constant use) and one in which she caused a huge pile-up in the middle of Budapest involving several vehicles and a bus. When I was in her car a few weeks ago within 15 minutes of leaving my hotel she smacked a wheel against a lane separator and wrecked the tyre, the car had no spare and there was no replacement available in the entire country so we ended up hiring a van from the dealer in the nearest town, which meant we missed all our meetings.:headshake:
