So why should I go?

Because you haven't seen inbred, six-fingered hicks before?

Not been for a while, but the Strugglers, north-west of the castle used to be good, and the Queen Vic, west of the castle, better still. Had a good laugh in there one Christmas Eve when some southern ponce came in and asked for "a pint of real ale". I kid ye not. The barman, with great patience, and even greater control of his laughter muscles, showed him the range of handpumps and carefully described the available beers. For those in the know, it's a Castle Rock (ex Tynemill) pub.

Edit: the Vic is now a Bateman's pub apparently.

I've had a few good nights there.

If you go up steep hill and turn right into the square the pub in the right hand corner, next to the cathedral, is a good one.

You can't drink outside after 22:00 though with it being so close to the cathedral grounds.

That one is managed by a cyclist friend of ours, so you chose well.

My grandparents lived in Spalding. Used to love going there and not just for the family relationship. Excelllent varied fishing in the various rivers and relief channels and borrowing my grandma's heavy bike with its metal rod brakes and cycling to the outlying settlements.

There's a forgotten corner of Lincolnshire which is flatter and more featureless than the fens, if that's possible. Logically, it should be part of north Nottinghamshire or south Yorkshire, but they both managed somehow to avoid responsibility and Lincolnshire was typically slow off the mark and got lumbered with it. You don't even need to cross the natural barrier of the river Trent to get there from Glossop, @nickyboy . The Isle of Axholme is mainly a desolate wasteland of lowland peat bogs, but does have a notable event coming up on the 6th January; the Haxey Hood Game , best observed from a safe distance. While you're in the neighbourhood, you could also pay a visit to Epworth, birthplace of John Wesley, but I wouldn't bother if I were you.

It looks like I'm going to have a fun day out when I get around to finally crossing Lincolnshire off my "counties not yet visited" list. As soon as we get some milder weather and a nice tailwind I'm going to have a ride over there and see what all the fuss is about
