Second ride on new bike, oops, crash.

Did 27 miles on the new bike this morning which was great apart from a slight accident.

Approaching a mini roundabout the ground was a bit wet and the wheels just slipped away from me. I am ok, a couple of cut knees and a bruised right shoulder. The bike looks ok, shifters, pedal and rear derailer are slightly scraped. I was turning right so the right side took the impact. Front brake was locked but a bit of a wiggle freed it off (didn't have my multitool with me). For the rest of the ride (7 or 8 miles) the bike seemed to perform as normal.

So the question is, is there anything I need to check over or do to make sure all is ok?

Cheers.

You might want to check that the derailleurs (front and rear) still change OK through the full range of sprockets, because sometimes impacts from crashes can bend them slightly, which affects shifting.

As above check your derailleurs, especially the rear as you mentioned it was scraped. It is easy for a bent rear hanger to go unnoticed until you have shifting issues.

Thanks people.

I will check out the derailleurs and hangers. Hopefully everything is ok.

Well that's the first road bike lesson learned, take it easy on tight corners in wet conditions.

What's the bike made of? Is there any damage to the frame, forks?

Not a road bike lesson to ride cautiously round corners in the wet, it's a road usage lesson whatever the 'vehicle'

Heal well

Giant Defy, one week old.. And as far as I can see no frame/fork damage. I wasn't pushing it, probably 12mph max, just not used to road bike skinny tyres, having just upgraded from a mtb.

Having had many years riding motorcycles I am always conscious of road conditions and how they can catch you out.

Thanks for your best wishes.

MTB tyres would have dumped you as easily if maybe not so quickly.

Another thing to be mindful of is that new tyres can often be rather slippery in the wet. Until they have bedded in for 50 miles or so it's worth being extra cautious.

Oh - and some tyres are just lethal in the rain....Zafiro's I'm looking at you......

Clipped up ? If like me your used to an upright position and being able to do the dab on slidey turns, then skinny tyres riding position with sod all control..... Then you clip your feet up. You just know your coming off at some point when the back let's go

Yep, I was clipped in. Really don't know if it was the front or back that let go first, it happened that quickly I was on the floor before I knew what was happening, suspect it was the front.

Honestly it sounds more like you hit something like diesel rather than just water

I am thinking it might have been diesel too.

I once hit a patch of diesel on a roundabout on a motorbike, thought I was a goner but managed to get my right foot on the floor and hold the bike upright. Thankfully, the tyres all of a sudden found some grip and I stayed upright.
