Do you know something i dont . The fact that he was unwell when he stopped posting makes me wonder if hes ok , and yes i understand some folk think.... why bother ,.... just my nature i guess
No, i do not know something you don't. But unless you know this man and his family personally, which im assuming you don't, you can't simply impose your inquisitive mind any further than here without the invading the privacy of him and his family, in my opinion...

No issues with you at all in seeking answers here, but it seems to be going a little too far with the hunting out of this mans private affairs...

A lot of assumption going on there....I have invaded nobodys privacy nor hunted out this mans private affairs, i have sent a pm to someone i have had many conversations with, and am concerned about considering his health, but thanks for your opinion all the same.

I didn't say you did, I don't recall directing a post your way... The thread speaks for itself regarding my point...

No issues, I understand your concern....

Quite. To be fair, if I suddenly disappeared for no apparent reason, from here, or the other industry-specific forum I frequent, I don't think I'd object to folk who were genuinely concerned for me/missing my presence looking me up and dropping me a message to check I was OK, especially given the current situation.

On the wider situation generally, I wonder if it might be an idea/possible for an extra little option on a user profile that one could tick to say something along the lines of "I don't mind if a mod contacts me directly (via email or maybe text) to check I'm OK", or even the option to put in a next-of-kin contact. It could default to off, but those of us who consider ourselves part of the furniture (say, with a substantial post count based on the 'trophys'/length of service) could get an alert about opting in. These sort of threads only really seem to come up when it's about someone who we are 'missing', so it shouldn't be too much of a burden?
That's a superb idea @irw. It would provide many CCers with some peace of mind regarding the 'missed' forum friend whilst not intruding on any privacy which should, of course, be respected.

I've told my sister to use my laptop to post a message using my account if anything happens to me. I am always left logged in on this device so she just has to follow the shortcut to access the forum.

Same here, pretty much like when dear @vernon passed away very suddenly.

I have instructions stuck inside the lid of my ipad. There is a code needed to access it but anybody who knows where to look [only family know] can easily find it.

I am struggling as to why folk refer to being concerned, as stalking and invading privacy etc, @raleighnut hits the nail on the head , many of us would not have known about vernon if it wasnt for friends of his, and yes i mean friends, not anonymous bods behind a keyboard.

Your confusing the 2 issues there. Nothing wrong with being concerned, but hunting out private addresses and phone numbers even where he lives could easily be mistaken for stalking and invading privacy... Im struggling to understand why this is acceptable. You haven't personally as far as im aware roadrash but it has seemingly happened... The forum webmaster/moderators almost certainly have access to his IP addresses and could easily find his personal address and therefore his welfare, but there are rules and laws that have to be adhered to.

Have folk considered that he doesn't want to be contacted?

I never met Vernon, but have seen some of his posts and he seemed like a popular and entertaining guy. But it was an act of luck that people got to know what happened to him. If people choose to leave instructions to contact forum members on what happens if the worst should happen, then that's fine, of course. But is it reasonable to spread concerns to potentially harassing families from what is nothing more than a social media platform and afaik, a bunch of faceless nobodies turning up on the doorstep?

There could be many reasons why Screenman has gone radio silent and he may have been ill, that still doesn't mean the worst. I too hope he is OK. But the simple fact is, we may never know. Which is what happens on 99% of social media platforms. No one really has a instant right to know, unless you personally know them, the family or has given you strict instructions of what to do if they go missing.

I don't mean to upset anyone and no malice ever intended and hopefully he posts soon...

Screenman is easy to find.
I did 10 minutes 'research' and found him.
And.....no.......I'm not publishing the information.

Ditto. I thought I'd have a go in between reading student drafts. And no, I'm not sharing it either.

I hope they're well. But they're also busy.

Remember that we can and do share a lot of information on this forum. I'm OK with that given much of my profile has to be public anyway with my job - 5 seconds is all it takes to bring up my information! Remember that everything you post is probably searchable, and publicly so.

How can the seeking of information thats in the public domain be construed as an incasion of privacy? If the information is publically accessible then there is no privacy to be maintained.

And you might want to read the legal definition of stalking. That comes down to mens rea so under these circumstances would not be stalking. No ingent to cause harassment, alarm, distress, etc - no stalking.

There is nothing legally or morally wrong with seeking publicly held information about a person with intent to enquire after their welfare. If such enquiries are successful, the target is located, and they then turn round and say bog off then fair play, leave them alone, but up until the time that happens...
