Schwalbe Marathon Winter tyres

I found my M+ and Ms absolutely fine on the snow and ice during the last two winters. The winter tyres work better (seen them in action) but how likely is it we're going to have a winter as bad as either of the last two in terms of snow and ice?

The long range forecast from the Met. Office, is for a colder than average and drier than average winter but considering the Met. Office predicated a mild winter last year it would seem a completely pointless forecast to base any purchases on.

£53 delivered for two M Winters is great value, just finding some can be hard this time of year.

I'm not predicting anything, just saying that last year was a more unusual winter (as was the winter before). I managed fine even though my road and a few neighbouring ones were under 2 inches of ice and other things for 4 weeks last winter and 2 weeks in winter 2008/9. If it keeps people out on their bikes then good, seems a bit pricey to me.

Got a pair of Schwalbe Ice Spiker's - hopefully the act of spending far too much money on snow tyres will bring the mildest winter on record...to teach me a lesson.

I would have thought you could do the main roads route which are clear of snow ?

After last Winter I'm tempted to get a pair. What are they like on normal surfaces though? Wouldn't the spikes wear down faster then?

You run them at full pressure when it is not icy and that way the spikes do not contact the ground. When it is icy you let some air out and so the tyre has more contact with the ground and the spikes get to do their stuff.

I'm trying to work out whether it's worth forking out the extra for the Marathon Winters over the cheaper Snow Studs? The Snow Studs look like they might be better for non-icy conditions as they don't have studs in the centre, but from what I've read the Marathons are better on ice...has anyone tried both?
