I wouldn't worry too much about not using data when roaming in Europe these days. O2 is £2/day for 120 text, 2 hours of calls and "unlimited" data. That's well worth it compared to being lost.

And make sure you visit the underground museum while you are there http://www.greatwar.co.uk/french-flanders-artois/museum-wellington-quarry.htm

Thanks for this hopefully have time to stop by. I managed to get hold of a copy of my gg's battalion diary, I have the approximate coordinates of where he was killed, of course no actual mention of his name or the other man killed from his regiment on the same day, this was generally reserved for officer's only. Cheers

Yes, HERE is great for offline navigation. Great coverage across all of western Europe so good for holidays too....just download the country maps over WiFi. These guys have been making digital maps since way before google even existed and are on most of the sat navs on high end bmws, Mercedes, audis (these 3 actually bought HERE now).

I've got Here Maps on my Windows Phone, and I uploaded a GPX "route" on Here Maps using same account login, but I cannot see a way to load the map up on the phone. I have downloaded the "Country" map where my route takes place. Maybe I will accessing the GPX on the phone and see if loads up in a chosen app.

Here for rides.
Windows 10 Mobile native Maps application, with maps pre-downloaded over wifi in advance, has stopped me getting lost in Newcastle, Cardiff, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Malmo, and Kiruna (Arctic Sweden) so far this year, amongst other places.
