thanks Norm... definitely not the best time of the year to get a new bike, good offers though however nothing in stock!

Cannot find a hybrid with drop handlebars around £300.

Most roads around that price come with double cranckset or again are out of stock. In my area will be nice to have the lower gear..

Better look again in a few months and also considerate 2nd hand ones

thank you all for your help

Rockyraccoon, if you still have knobbly tyres on your MTB then you might consider replacing them with slicker, narrower high-pressure "city" tyres, it will noticeably improve efficiency, speed and grip if you only ride on decent paved/tarmac roads.

I replaced the knobblies on my MTB with 26" x 1.5" Schwalbe City Jet tyres (from Halfords) which can be pumped to 85psi, there are plenty of other good choices. City tyres allow me to ride my 18-mile round-trip commute without exhausting myself and with a measure of puncture protection.

On starting out a year or two back i got a hybrid (giant CRS) on the cycle to work scheme - wanted something of reasonable quality,'see how it goes' etc. never saw myself as a road bike rider but was open minded.

I decided after many rides to just keep the CRS as I'm more of a casual, leisure rider, whereas my mates tend to do 70 miles on a sunday, sportives, full on riding. I joined in for a while and whilst definately enjoyable if hard work, i decided its not for me - i'll do the scenic rides, stop for tea, cake and nice views etc.

After a nasty injury the bike was in the garage for a year - given it a quick once over and its tip top, chain still well lubed etc.

Also have all the lycra gear but again, partly because i'm a bit of a big bloke and cant be bothered to reach and maintain a high level of fitness (draining full time job + in a band which takes a lot of time), i decided to go for the mountain bike kind of gear - looser fit, 3/4/ length shorts etc - all still bike specific and very comfortable but just an altogether more relaxed look. Not that i care one jot about looking like the only gay in the village in lycra, its just my preference....and i've learned over the years with any form of excrsise - gym, swimming, walking etc...i'm an 'all or nothing' person so i end up going hell for leather and never maintain it beyond about year....

.....so i'll stick with my hybrid bike and 'relaxed fit' attitude to clothes and life. It's all good though and whatever floats your cycling boat is a good antidote to the work/home/work/home drudgery of life

I've been thinking about changing the type of tyres. Schwalbe have very good reviews. I'll definitely replace them as you suggest snailracer.
