Road cassette on a mountain bike?

Hi, I hope I'm not too late for this thread and the cognoscenti still read it. I've just had a similar sort of problem. I have a Klein Mantra with an Shimano XTR rear cassette (11-34, I think), but because I ride on roads and tracks (yep road-ish tyres too), I never use anything above 27. I also have a 46 XTR chainring which I'm almost never out of. So I thought I would give myself some more flexibility and fit an Untegra 11-27 cassette. It worked just fine in all gears except the smallest 11T, where it just kept jumping off almost each rotation. The cassette and the chain and both very slightly worn and I have an XTR rear mech. I put the MTB cassette back on and it worked fine on the 11T. Anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong?

You say chain and cassette both slightly worn, is that together or from different set ups? Can you try the 11T from the MTB cassette and put it on the road cassette and try that. Are the basic adjustments (limit screws cable etc.) set up ok.

You're right, they're from different set ups, but then I took the 11T and 15T from the XTR cassette and swapped them over with the bottom two gears from the Ultegra cassette (minus the spacer) and strangely, it did exactly the same thing - OK on all gears but jumped al the time on the 11T. I re-tightened the cable and re-adjusted the limit screws just in case the cassettes were a mm or two different but it didn't stop the problem.
