again i'm showing my ignorance here but these co2 cartridges do they screw directly onto the tyre valve and then bob's your uncle or is life not as simple as that?

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Topeak Road Morph .

Great pump as it gets up to road bike tyre pressures in under a minute , i have the model with the pressure gauge and at home i have a track pump.

C02 inflators work pretty much the same as normal pumps with a button to inflate the tyre but use disposable cannisters for the gas , the only problem is C02 tends to leak so you really need to replace the air when you get home or it will be flat in a few days.

Another vote here for topeak mini morph... have used it twice out on the road, and got to 100+ both times, with a bit of effort, mind, but got there.

This <link> would do it, apparently.Upto 160 psi, apparently. You may still need to be bionic to achieve that tho.

I carry that pump and I don't think I've ever got over 80psi (60psi more frequently) but I certainly don't have bionic biceps  for my lack of p'tures (touchwood) and its size/weight its a great pump to carry for those odd get me home emergencies. I think if I had more frequent visits from the fairy I'd invest in one of those road morphs.

No, they don't screw into the valve, you also have to buy an adapter. Most seem to be pretty one-shot, as well, you can't really use half a cartridge and expect the other half to be still available when you get your next puncture in 3 months.

You also have the issue, as Hottie said, that you might be tempted to carry a spare pump because you will, at some point, need at least one more cartridge than you are carrying.

Is there any chance that you could burst an inner tube with too much pressure?
Yes, but it's more likely that you'll get a very uncomfortable ride first. You'll have to try very hard to over-inflate road tyres with a mini-pump. With a lot of effort, you might over-inflate an MTB tyre but you'll probably need a few days to recover from that sort of exertion.

That mini morph thing looks quite good, but the foot thingy looks a bit insubstantial.
Rats, you could have tried mine at the weekend. I haven't had an issue with the foot yet, although I've only used it "in anger" a handful of times. Damned good pump, though, and both the foot and the swivel handle are very useful.
