sounds like a strange choice to me! Tubs for city riding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!????????????
No not for city riding but they may get left on after a weekend ride to nip to the shop etc .
However I do live in London and don't plan on driving the bike to the park to go for a ride .
Ricardo has done his best to help me spec some wheels given that im not giving him a lot to go on . I know nothing other than I want light and sexy . I think he has done pretty well given the stupid questions I have been asking :shy:
Im happy to go with the planet x gear . I don't trust ebay overseas sellers and there doesn't seem to be a saving although I could be wrong . Thanks for the input though . Its all going into the brain so I ask less stupid questions .

if you are going for deep section, low spoke count tubular rims, why not just buy factory built wheels? most of which are actually built by real people

Handbuilt wheels usually means that you are looking for something either extra special or not available to buy

I must be unusual then . I enjoy the craftsmanship and the thought of riding on hand built wheels is extra special to me . I cant make a wheel , I can make a staircase , window , door but not a wheel .
A bit like going to the Butcher or the Supermarket for your meat I guess .

most wheelbuilders would turn their noses up at your current choice of components!
Yes, at the butcher you pay more for exactly the same product just because a real person has prepared/packed it, a bit like your wheel build
you need to visit the rare breed farm - pay more for something not available elsewhere

Seriously, you don't know much about wheels do you?

More people race on Chinese carbon than the 'major' brands put together. PX wouldn't be my first choice for rims, but it's not a bad choice, and if you are risk averse, it may be better to go through a middle man. Novatec are a highly respected Taiwanese hub manufacturer, who make hubs under their own name as well as for other manufacturers, and CX Rays are the best spokes bar none.

What, pray tell, is there among that lot that ANY wheelbuilder would turn their nose up at? As to factory wheels - what exactly are you offering at £400-500? To get aero tubs in that weight range you'd need to look at HEDs or FFWDs at £800-£1000.

I'm also a fan of Novatec - I have built a few wheels with them. I use them in my own wheels too. One of the super light hubs they do, have been reported with cartridge failure too often for my me though.

I had taken e-rider for somebody that understood the difference between handbuild and factory wheels. I still have a Shimano 16 spoke wheel somewhere which I rode till 2 years ago. If I broke one spoke then I would have to pay £9 for each and that is if I find them. I have no chance to find a rim or hub anymore. My new wheel set is lighter and can get any parts off the shelf any time at a reasonable cost.

Saying that most wheelbuilders would look at or shy away from building a wheel set like Cuchillo wants is nonsense. I asked a friend who is a wheelbuilder and makes wheel for a living what he thought of the list of components and he thought they were fine. He added Race spokes would keep the total cost down.

The rims are £160 posted, for the pair
plus £32 VAT plus £10 "handling charge" from the carrier for dealing with HMRC on your behalf, and possibly some import duty as well.
Agreed quite a few items do get through the system without being taxed, but the chances are lower on large items.

You may be right, I have never been charged, nor anyone else I know, including on wheels and frames.

You can get tubular Duranos, but it's like putting tractor tyres on a Ferrari. If you are going to ride tubs, get good ones.

Veloflex or Vittoria depending on your budget and what you can find in the sales. I recall getting Corsa CX from Ribble for cca £35. Great tubs at that price.
