There is no "proper clothing" for cycling. I wouldn't suggest flip-flops or a long skirt that might get caught in the wheel but otherwise you can wear what you like.
I frequently wear Birkenstocks, though one of my cycling workmates disapproves! And the hassle with skirts are ones that are very straight, you need a bit of movement space in a skirt.

I was exactly the same a year ago. Fatty on a bike with no proper gear at all. I've bought some kit since then but it hasn't enhanced or detracted from my enjoyment. It's about getting out not what you look like. Go for it mate and don't worry, you'll soon be going so fast, no one will have time to see what you're wearing.

Joking aside the lycra thing is nothing to do with what I look like . OK you buy what you think maybe nice but its more to do with sweating up or keeping warm .
You don't go swimming fully clothed do you ? But you may pull up your jeans to take a paddle .

Sometimes I go out in Jeans and a collared shirt, other times it's tracksuit bottoms and a t-shirt, sometimes with a hoody depending on how cold it is.

I couldn't being myself to do Lycra. That lasted a week and then I caved. Really love the kit now and don't cycle without it.

The difference for me is, I only ride for recreation and never just to get somewhere. If I was using my bike as transport, then I would dress for where I was going like the rest of you guys.

The most important thing is to wear whatever you God damn like!
