Dewsbury has a character all of its own, you'd have to agree. If you live in Dewsbury, where do you go shopping?!?!

Supermarket - Sainsbury's Dewsbury. The staff are friendly.

Other stuff - White Rose Centre, Leeds, online.

It's rare I buy anything in Dewsbury itself, although my bank, building society and optician are there. After living here for 13 years I'm still probably not a 'local'.

Don't tell me you live here as well? If so (and even not) what do you think of the place?

I worked there for five years as a cop. It was busy! Not a bad old place really, but over the last few years the town centre has dwindled to a scratty handful of small retailers as the big ones pull out. It has some redeeming features- the Town Hall is a real jewel, the Minster is a beautiful and atmospheric building, but stuff like Pioneer House and all the town centre empty shops heading out towards Halifax and Bradford are truly dire.

Considering it has more or less the same textile origins and history as Halifax, Huddersfield and Keighley, it hasn't really fared well in comparison.

I was Community Safety Inspector at the time of 7.7 and its aftermath, and Neighbourhood Policing Inspector just after the Dewsbury Moor saga, so had a lot of tidying up to do over both operations.

Hello there,

I'd like to join you in your bike rides if possible (coming next week when I get my bike).
Haven't been in Leeds but for a few months and don't know any cyclists.
Do you guys have anything planned ?

Hi Tudor,

Nothing planned just now so far as I know but I think Yellow Tim had some ideas on arranging a ride locally.

Whereabouts are you ?

10 minute walk from Hyde Park, so not sure if it;s technically Headingley yet. (LS6 area)

As I have a lot of spare time, I'd want to go out usually during the week too, not just the weekend.
Is anyone doing any 1-2 hour rides on the weekdays?

Also, where can I find some good routes around Leeds?

I use this site to plan any trips and also to see where I've been.

There are stacks of good rides going north out of Leeds. Just a couple of miles up the Otley Road from Hyde Park and once past the ring road you are pretty much out in the sticks if you get off the main road. Maybe better to cut off up Weetwood Lane and avoid Lawnswood Roundabout.

Anywhere along the Wharfe Valley is good riding country. I guess it depends on how far you want to go. Out to Wetherby, Otley, Ilkley and pretty much all places in between. If you stay off the main roads traffic is light too.

Are you new to cycling? Or are you just waiting for your new bike to arrive?

All right then, i'll have a look over that site.
I'll try your suggestions, but i'm still hoping to catch a ride with someone from the area, at least for my first ride.

Im only new to road bikes, but i've been riding mountainbikes for some years now.
