Well. I started to take the bike apart tonight, and have found an annoying number of stuck items:-
both pedals are stuck to their crank arms (steel pedal spindles, aluminium cranks)
the left crank arm is stuck to the bottom bracket axle (steel axle, aluminium crank)
one cantilever was stuck to its boss, so the (brass?) inner bit is still on the boss as it came apart when I pulled it
the studs holding the middle ring on the crank spin in their holes and you need a huge screwdriver (or a special tool, no doubt) to hold them still
and - most annoyingly, the stem is still stuck in the forks (although I think both parts are steel)
I've also found quite a lot of wear:-
the middle chain ring has some very short teeth and some very worn gaps between teeth
the cassette is evenly (and quite badly) worn
the drive side spokes are bent and chewed
And some bits that aren't so bad:-
the bottom bracket feels ok, although I can't get it apart until I get the crank off
the wheel hubs feel ok (Exage, not LX)
the frame seems basically sound
both derailleurs now work
Anyway - some pictures (excuse the mess; dissasembly took place in the kitchen)
Frame
Mangled drive-side spokes
Shark's teeth
Worn middle ring
Shiny, repaired (Altus, I think?) derailleurs
The forks have me stumped to be honest. The plug has moved - in fact it's no longer quite straight, which is worrying in itself. I assume though that the steel forks are rusted to the steel stem. The problem is getting penetrating oil in there. I can't remove the lock nut because the stem is in the way, and it has a rubber seal around it so I can't get oil in there. Looking from the bottom all I can see is fork and plug. I've loosened the headset a the small amount I can, and the whole thing moves, but as one. I've also tried boiling water to the head tube in an atttempt to expand it, to no avail.
I don't want to take it to the bike shop, but in lieu of owning a bench or vice I can't think of much else - I would be loath to replace the forks for reasons of budget and hassle. Any ideas much appreciated.
