One thing to bear in mind if you are permanently getting rid of your car, don't let car insurance lapse.
I know it sounds daft but get your name put on someones policy, because if you do go for a few years without insurance and return to the motoring fraternity your policy could be high and possibly no claims bonuses will be lost. Also one day you might have to drive?
This happened to me a good few years ago when I handed back a company car, although I had no claims I lost all my no claims bonuses I'd previously built up, even a company letter didn't convince the insurers.
This is great advice!! I thoroughly hate driving simply because I can get everywhere local in the same time or less and I don't have the stress of driving, sitting in traffic or constant traffic lights, finding somewhere to park and paying for it and wondering whether some maggot has damaged my car on return.
I too am kind of in the market for a sturdy tourer but I keep realising I have one in my Scott Sub 20. Hydraulic disc brakes, full mudguard and rack mounts, huge ratio on a Deore XT triple, 37mm Continental Sport Contacts, bar ends.
I may be a bit quicker on a drop bar bike that's a bit lighter - but I'd have to pay for the privilege. Cost me about £380 for a mint example. My go to shopping, filthy weather / commuter bike.
I also have my 1st road bike that I am sentimentally attached to and is my fast commuter. And a light carbon bike that I have spent so much money on it's made it impossible for me to get rid of haha! But has become my dry bike only.
Under £2000 for all three purchase price......Spent a little bit on upgrading and maintaining since though.....
