Replacement rear wheel for secteur sport 2010

Was out on my bike yesterday and noticed a shush , shush noise from one of the wheels and assumed crap on the front wheel but couldn't find anything. Then two miles from home it got a lot louder and decided it was the rear wheel so stopped and found a busted spoke and the wheel was deformed at this point and no longer ride-able so a 2 mile walk home .
Looking at replacement rear wheel options and given it's a 9 cog cassette I'm seeing the Shimano RS21 at about £90.
Any suggestions for alternatives in the same sort of price bracket please ? Note I live in the sticks so local bike shop is Halfords which isn't really an option.

Have you considered repairing your existing wheel?

1 new wheel in 6 years isn't excessive though and by the time I started walking it was rubbing hard with resistance against the brake pad so suspect the bend after 8 miles without the spoke is beyond just truing the wheel.

Of course you can buy a new wheel if you're determined to. But it simply is not necessary - the wheel can be repaired at a fraction of the cost of a new one. But hey, it's your money.

Noticed you "walked" home. You might have been 20 miles away from home and what I would have tried was
- remove the broken spoke or wrap round the spoke next to it
- loosen the brake cable with the adjuster or use allen key to let the cable out a bit.

Should be able to ride home if just one spoke gone and only using the front brake.

Also don't write off Halfords. If they do a repair, I'm sure it would have a warranty for a few weeks, so you could easily take it back if it fails.

Hope you get it fixed.

I'll run it past the bloke with the cycle repair shop in the market but in the event that he says not repairable any suggestions in that event ?

Seriously - anyone who tells you that a wheel with a single broken spoke is not repairable is not worth listening to anyway.

Single broken spoke and deformed to a point beyond that caused by the spoke breaking though. Seemed to go from barely audible rubbing to very audible and sticking while passing through the brake. I'm no light weight and took it though a number of hills after I suspect the spoke went (felt like I'd run over something more substantial than a stone with a loud noise a few miles earlier which might have been the spoke going)

The fact that it rubs on the brakes is no surprise, simply opening up the calipers a bit would probably stop that. Just go ahead and buy a new wheel - you sound like your mind is made up.

Certainly check to see if repairable dependending on the state of the rim (not sure from description above)
The Shimano you've looked at is fine. Even the entry level Shimano 501s are pretty good and shop around on line for a set from £65ish (being in mind I've no idea on condition/wear of your front) . I bought those as crash replacements from Ribble for my old bike a couple of years ago and they've been fine

My car's service light just came on. What new car do you think I should get? I see that BMW has a promotion on the new 655 AMG. Is it worth it?

Regarding Halfords, the last price list I saw they charge £25 to replace a broken spoke. All my LBS do it for £10 labour + cost of spoke, so usually around £11.
