Bike looks clean.
You only need a new cassette because the current one is 9sp and your shifters (Claris) are 8sp.
Because you need a new cassette, you need a new chain (actually you might well be fine but this depends on how many miles the cassette has done - and you will have no idea). I'd save the chain for when you've done 1500 miles on the new one, and then try it.
You do not need a new derailleur - as you postulate, the cage folds like that because there's no tension being applied by the non-existent cable. Put the chain on the large ring at the front and you'll see that it looks fine.
The LBS will appreciate your custom, though, so by all means go for it. They maybe able to make you a decent offer on nice road shoes and pedals and cleats. Have you considered the Cycle-to-Work scheme as it may offer tax advantages?

I’m curious, does it look damaged?

I phoned up the guy and told him that I’m going to buy new things for the rest part of the bike. He replied, “No problem, thanks.”

How do I know which spokes to buy?

Does the derailleur look damaged? Ask your mechanic.

What spokes to buy? Just to be on the safe side, buy 10 spokes of each kind and brand you can find on the internet. Buy all of them!!! I mean, statistically speaking that's a good way to find what you need, right?

As I opined, the rear mech looks fine.
Worth asking them to check rear mech hanger alignment before indexing etc. Am I stealing @screenman's thunder?
Well if you don’t like it then you know what you can do...
I also recommend you don't start to 'take people on', 'specially not 'Big-balls'.
We've tried to explain to you why the 'normal' helpful population on here is having a bit of a struggle with you. ETA: Note that an antonym of 'normal' is 'weird'.

I'm in a very similar position to LemonJuice.
I have two bikes, both stone age machines, one is a 1970's/80's vintage Falcon, the other is a Raleigh of similar vintage.
Both need plenty of attention.
Should I start a new thread or tag on to this one? Some forums have different etiquette requirements to others.

Roger.
