Hi
New to forum so please bear with me, especially if this question has been asked before. I have looked around and while there are loads of recomendations, i need one that is quite specific to my requirements.

I currently have an old Claud Butler mountain bike which has been converted slightly into a Hybrid but it's showing its age and an upgrade is needed.

The new bike will be used for 90% of my time on roads and cycle paths with the occasional trips down the Thames Cycles Paths.

My inside leg is 29 inches and I am 5'7 so the size is also important.

I am used to toe clips and I also have handlebars with have the end part that sticks up (sorry not sure what they are called).

I am guessing that a Hybrid will be best so I am looking at an attractive one in the 250-300 pounds mark.

Just as an idea I like the look of the Specialized Sirrus 2009 Road Bike.

Look forward to the ideas and if it has been answered elsewhere please accept my apologies and let me have the link

I'm currently looking for a bike with roughly the same specifications as you.

I've pretty much narrowed my choice to either a Carrera Subway

Or a Kona Dew

If anyone else wants to chip in with other recommendations I'd be interested.

How about this, or something else in the Ridgeback range?
Well-designed bikes at a competitive price.

Those are new to me. Interesting. I must say they appear to be well-done and -priced. Thanks for the link.

Nicely-designed, as well. Their "Metro" line looks very nice and the steel tourers especially impressive. Next time I'm in UK, I'll have to see one in the flesh.

As for the OP's sizing question: Have a read of this.

The kona Dew has riser bar style handlebars which might not suit all ... bit like an overgrown bmx ... but if you can fit on it, go for it ... or, for cheaper money its worth looking at a Scott P6

I picked up a Subway2 on Saturday. Not sure which year it was 08 I suspect. It's a dark grey colour.

I rode around a fair bit on Sunday in the worst weather imaginable and was fairly impressed for what it is. Seems very well built, SRAM gears are good and it's even not as heavy as I thought it might be. Capability for adding both mudguards and panniers too, and it even looks pretty good as well.

I'm going to do my regular commute to work on it tomerrow and I'll be interested to see how much more time it adds compared to my road bike.

You are going down cycle paths and tow paths rather than sticking to nice roads so you are going to need something that is going to be able to take the abuse.
Sticking to the 300 pound mark may seem attractive now but if you spend a bit more initially you are going to be spending less in the future on replacing broken parts, so is actually going to cost you less in the long run, therefore something that is going to be perfect for your purposes would be this:

i ride the local canal towpaths and bridleways on a hard-tailed mtb, and would quite happily do so without any suspension in the front fork.

a full suss mtb for those sort of rides is a bit like buying a full carbon fibre race machine for a 5 mile commute, imho.

I hope you went round it with the can of polish before it got wet. If not, you might find it red-rusty later today.
