I downloaded the Registry Booster from a link on another thread. It has told me I have 650 errors and now wants to charge me to get it fixed. Is it worth it? £19.95

In all likelihood, not really. The errors will probably be trivial and cause no problem at all. If you are obsessive, like everything just so, then maybe you want to clean up but it's not necessary.

For instance, if you're someone that tries out a lot of free/shareware programs and then uninstalls them, chances are they'll have left entries in the registry, dead links etc. Such things are reported as 'errors' when they're nothing to be concerned about.

I'd go the free route suggested above and see how many errors that cleans up.

Thanks all for the advice, I've uninstalled Registry Booster and will go down the free route.

The registry can contain many thousands of entries. I uninstalled Office 2010 manually and there were 55,000 entries. There are bound to be a few errors, mailnly from invalid links to programs that used to be installed.

+1 for CCleaner, http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download

CCleaner.

+1 for CCleaner

Another good free piece of software is Malwarebytes Anti Malware. It is very good at detecting those programs that tell you (falsely) that there is malware on your system.

And Microsoft Security Essentials is a decent free anti-virus package - takes up less room than AVG and the system seems to run quicker than with AVG and Symantec.

if anyone want's help to speed up/clean their computer.
Download Hijackthis, scan your computer and send the scan results it to the chaps on the webuser forum here
They will go through your report and let you know what (if any) problems you may have and how to fix/clean your computer. And they do it for free.

Good link - ta. v. much. I'll certainly use it.

That's for infections or serious slowdown problems not general cleaning though.
Best to use hijackthis to check for items that look unfamiliar and do a search to see if it's junk before posting the list on a forum. Seen too many monster lists posted by folks who have installed every gadget you can imagine and haven't even noticed the items being run from the temp folder.
