Weve had a Miele for coming on for 20 years, no problems

I don't think Miele are anywhere near as good as they used to be but the main issue is when their products do need repair, organising repairs can be very time consuming and the price of repair is absolutely ridiculous. It's one thing to be slightly more reliable than your next competitor but then if you charge 3x as much for the repair that is completely uncompetitive. Which is why I would definitely recommend LG over Miele. Almost as reliable and sometimes more reliable and with much better pricing on repairs.

Miele are about three times the price to buy in the first place as well.

We have an Ebac washing machine. It was quite expensive but is really quiet and has had heavy'ish use over the 3 years we have had it. One niggle has been the spin cycle is very prone to stop due to uneven loads. We had a new board fitted about 2 years ago to 'cure' it...it did improve it but it's never stopped being a niggle still. Engineer came out again and fitted another board with the latest firmware (v18) and that seems to have sorted it.
Lovely machine in every other way...

BTW, engineer (sub contract, not working for Ebac) said his was the same...can't remember the make but it wasn't Ebac.

Formerly we always had Hotpoints, always worked hard, rarely had problems, all lasted fairly well.

7 year warranty parts.and.labour with our Ebac...that's quite extraordinary in my book

You often see the comment " we don't make anything in this country anymore ". Ebac is made in this country and offers a 7 year parts and labour warranty. I purchased one of their dehumidifiers for our daughter. When our granddaughter removed and lost the rubber stopper from the permanent drainage port I phoned Ebac, spoke to a charming lady in customer service who said she'd "pop a couple in the post today " at no charge.
Of course they can't compete on price with something that's knocked out at the huge plants in China / Turkey / Poland etc, but it's good to see a company making a go of it.
Interestingly they also make Televisions 😮

My 20 year old Bosch was described as being indestructible unlike the current models by one repair person which probably explains the original posters issue.

Well, write it down boy ......
I used to have a Hotpoint top loader, which my mother passed on to me. She'd had it ten years and I used it for another 15 at least. Eventually the gearbox started leaking and I couldn't find a replacement anywhere, so got another machine. A few months later I was helping a friend empty his garage (he's a right hoarder) and I said "what's that?" - it was a gearbox for a Hotpoint top loader. Grrrrr.

I have a Miele now, which was v expensive when I bought it and it had a couple of faults in the first few years (and Miele have a minimum call out charge), but it's been fine since. It's knocking on for 20 years now.

I'm actually on the lookout for another machine for my lad, so following this thread with interest.

The problem with recommending a machine make is that it is based on personal experience

and that is based on a machine that has lasted 10 years or more
Hence it is based on a machine that was made over a decade ago
and in that time businesses might well have changed standards and procedures
and.or been taken over by anotehr company - managers come and gone and all that

so a machine that has lasted 10 years may not always indicate a make that makes good machine now

Over the last 37 years, my three washer dryers have have done 12, 14, & 10 years. Given that the last one would have probably soldiered on a bit longer if the repair man hadn't sabotaged it, I think they've all managed roughly comparable and consistent lifespans.
