The normal practice is that proxy votes are used to support the indicated wish of voting members, not go against it. I wasn't a member for many years afterwards because of the handling of this, and I am only a member now for the insurance.

I see some people on here disagreed with the name change from CTC to CyclingUK. I don't.

These days Cycling UK spend a lot of their resources on campaigning to make cycling an easy first choice for running errands, like taking kids to school, going to the shops, work and so on.

I go on cycle tours/bike packing trips myself. Making cycling safer for utilitarian trips is far more important for social justice and the climate crisis than anything I could want as a holidaying cyclist. I'm so glad they've taken up the mantle of being the advocate for the every day cyclist, rather than what is, let's face it, the very niche pursuit of going on cycle touring holidays.

Anyone who's read their magazine knows they still talk a lot about cycling holidays, but I think "Cycling UK" as a name reflects their most important work better.

But they should have started a new organisation to do that, not destroy an existing one. Actually, members like me are somewhat to blame as we weren't quick enough (or perhaps committed enough) to put a stop to the takeover. Certainly there certainly is a need for something like Cycling UK, but there are thousands like me who also need the CTC as it was.

I think "need" is a bit strong of a word when we're comparing transport poverty to going for a nice cycle touring holiday.

I guess you didn't read what I wrote. I agreed that something Cycling UK was necessary. What I also said that such an organisation should be established to do that, not take over an existing organisation with a different remit.

Has anyone tried to fill the gap left by the change from CTC to Cycling UK?

I wonder what a replacement would look like. Web only?

I read the entirity of what you wrote, I just think when comparing transport poverty to cycling holidays, no-one "needs" CTC in its original format. I agree such an organisation campaigning for things that make cycling holidays is good and I'd like that too.

I admit it's a minor point!

What is the gap? What did they do in the past that they don't do now? (Genuine question, not an argumentative gambit)

I was a member for several years back in the 80s and I used to get a magazine and some insurance and that was it, so for me there's not been much change. There were probably local groups I could have joined, but I either wasn't interested in doing so or I didn't know about them (I don't recall which, probably both). In those pre internet days the magazine was one of my few sources of info on bikes and cycling, so I used to look forward to it. Less so these days.

I would say that CC although not 'official' is one one the best advocacy sources for all things cycling related. From transport to sport and everything in between there is a knowledgeable source for answers.

Agreed. Put that together with Crazy Guy on a Bike, cycle.travel, RJ the Bike Guy and many, many other web based cycling resources and I have to ask what gap a cycle touring organisation would fill.

It is 'real' world stuff and I genuinely believe if we banded together with all this knowledge and worked alongside organisations like CUK, Sustrans to promote cycling in all its guises to government and local authorities we would get more done quicker. Idealistic in the extreme but I'm ever an optimistic person.
