Reasons not to wear helmets

Well there are campaigns for compulsory HiViz for wild ponies in the New Forest - so it is not as bizzarre as you think!

It may sound silly, but when I lived in Texas and was riding a Harley, I felt no need whatsoever to wear a helmet so I didn't. Now that I am riding a bicycle I feel the need to wear one because I feel I need all the protection I can get! hehe So I guess my reasons for not wearing one would be because I don't like someone telling me what I should or should not do and also because they are uncomfortable. I'll deal with it =P

Aren't they compulsary in BC? If so, how strictly is the law enforced?

Welcome, BTW.

I've never seen any modern helmets(post leather banana style) damaged, and would be interested to know how many you have seen over how many years, and what kind of cycling, sport, leisure, utility, off road?

Personally had to replace two after damage, haven't got exact number of incidents of others just know there's been a number on different rides. Including one guy who when he joined, ex-roadie was not keen (group policy no helmet no ride) but after splitting his helmet after a fairly innocuous fall has not ridden without one since. Why do manufactures offer crash replacement policies?

Do you think drivers should?

No but they should all ware seatbelts (as is the law). Same principle, appropriate protection for the environment.

But motorists have a massively greater number of head injuries than cyclists despite seat belts and NCAP and all the other measures. And in-car helmets exist so why would you not use one?

If we abide by 'freedom of choice' why must people use seat belts?

Proven to save lives perhaps. When the law came in I spent my time retro fitting belt into cars without them listening to people moaning. Not something you hear today in dealers, I don't want those fitted in my car, rather the other way round, are these pre-tensioned or how many air bags or where's the crumple zone? You can go round in circles with these arguments, is it everyones right to get in their car and drive it drunk?

Choose do do what you wish just don't blame anyone else for the consequences of your actions.

so the removal of freedom of choice is justified when it is a proven safety feature?

Apparently so; re the ban on hand guns.

(disagree with by the way)

As I said you can go around in circles with these silly sniping comments. If you choose not to ware a helmet then that's your choice, but when you're sitting in your vegetative state (which I hope you never are) don't blame anyone else but yourself for not talking the appropriate precautions for the activity you partake in.

There are many many more people sitting around in a vegetative state because they didn't wear a helmet when walking or driving. Would you make the same comment to them about not wearing a helmet. What about yourself if you get that way because of trip, fall or car accident? If not, why not?

I take it back, it appears you are already. Some people just don't, won't or can't listen to (read) a sensible argument within the bounds of the discussion topic. "appropriate precautions for the activity you partake in." if that means looking where you are going when walking then that should be compulsory.

Good night all, off to bed wearing a helmet in case the sky falls in.
