Hi, i have recently brought a mountain bike from halfords. it was £130 and just needed it to ride to work (no rough terrain). i can usually get 2 good rides (about 15 minutes each) before something goes wrong. The most common problem i have is that the rear wheel misaligns and starts to rub on the frame work - i then have to walk the rest of my journey. I also suffer from "Gear Slip" i think. i start to pedal - usually up hill and the chain jumps over the cogs? can anyone help resolve these?

How old is it? Sounds like you should just take it back and get them to fix it under warranty. If you do want to fix it yourself, is the rear wheel held on the a Quick Release lever or nuts? Either way a bit of tightening should sort it. To tighten the Quick Release, flip the lever open, tighten the acorn nut on the other end half a turn and close the Quck Release. The pressure required to do so is quite a lot, enough to leave an imprint in your hand. Idf it isn't that hard, repeat the tightening.

If it's held on with nuts, apply a 15mm spanner.

Hi Tim, its a brand new bike. i have only riden it a couple of times and have been back to halfords 3 times already. i took the bike to the mechanic near work and he has tightened again for me. i have been a bit cautious of over tightening in case i cause damage. should the wheel keep coming loose?

No, it shouldn't keep coming loose. Is it a quick release or a nut?

You should not be getting chain slip on a new bike. That is usually a feature of a new chain put onto an old worn-out gear cassette. It may be the wrong chain on the bike, perhaps ? Either way sounds like a rejection should be attempted.

A little harsh. The problem is that for minimum wage rarely will you find anyone willing to do anything more than the bare minimum especially in a retail outlet with probably very little in the way of progression. It's pay for weekend beers for them not a career.

Whatever its original cost the bike should work. It does sound like it needs attention so take it back although I do not subscribe to demanding a replacement [on the first visit]. Be calm and professional and state exactly the problems to be resolved and it'll no doubt be done.

Harsh, but unfortunately true in some branches I've been in round here......

What is the make of the bike?

Related to the cheapness may be the reason why the bike has problems.Im not trying to be funny but it's probably going to be a poor quality bike for that price.I known a few blokes at work who have bought low quality bikes and they have fallen apart in the first month. One LBS actually telling the cyclist it isn't meant to be used every day.

I ride my son's cast off Tesco special and the rear wheel doesn't shift. There's something wrong, if the nuts are loosening is it because they are directly on the cutouts? Anyway, get a pair of spanners & have a go at tightening it yourself on the journey, after taking it back to Halfords of course.

The rear wheel should not come loose ever, it's pretty shocking that Halfords haven't been able to sort It as there us obviously something fairly seriously wrong, the chain jumping will probably be down to the gear indexing which cant possibly be correct if the rear wheel Is constantly moving. Definitely take it back and get a refund or replacement.
My personal experience with Halfords has been fairly positive
I also brought a 120 quid bike and it functioned correctly for quite a few hundred miles till the cheapness started to show
