sorry for the rubbish title. I have and old campag cassette 11 speed. I have checked that the locking ring is tight, using the splined tool, but the sprockets run as if the are still loose. Should mention I am using non indexed gear lever on the down tube, but whatever gear I select it is always trying to jump gear as the chain is trying to go from 6 to 7 ( as an example) as the wheel rotates. Hope this makes sense, any thoughts much appreciated

Assume you're using an 11 speed chain matched, wear wise with the cassette. A wider chain eg <11sp, would be more sensitive to exact (manual non-indexed) lateral positioning (of the RD) and even then the system might exhibit the symptoms you describe.

Can you be clearer? "the sprockets run as if the are still loose" Can you actually shift the cassette from side to side by hand, ie increase the distance of the smallest sprocket from the hub?

Can't move the sprocket by hand. But they run as if they are at an angle relative to the axle. Chain is correct for sprocket, sorry it is actually 10 speed, almost as if the sprockets are bent. But this is not evident if backpeddling

What's the (maybe bent) hanger and RD got to do with sprockets at an angle (not 90) to the axle?
Having said that, it maybe the problem (well done for getting in there before @screenman !). Perhaps the OP will be able to describe the issue with even greater clarity.

My assumption was that the OP suggests that the cassette is tight and there is no play and the symptom is that the jump is occurring on one part of the cassette. Therefore what seems to be a wonkey cassette could in fact be a bent/twisted hanger. I guess another option is that the wheel is not straight in the dropouts. However, I think we all need more information from the OP.

Does 11 speed have a seperate lockring or is the smallest sprocket the lockring as well ?
If its just a lockring, undo it and make sure the smallest sprocket is sitting correctly on the splines. If its not, it can get trapped by the lockring leaving everything slightly out of position.
May not be the cause but worth a quick lookee.

It's a 10 speed @gbb : the OP corrected himself (I'm assuming, but on re-reading the quote, it depends on the 'strength' of the comma). But I guess your advice to check is equally valid for a 10 speed cassette..
Will deffo check top sprocket is on correctly
