Thank you so much to everyone for the advice, encouragement and the kind words about my photography (@Specialeyes that was more luck that design - that said, I can confidently say I'm better with the visual arts than I am with bike repair!).
Turns out I had messed the thread up with my stupid antics but a splendid young fellow from Decathlon managed to gently re-tap the thread by using pliers on the barrel adjuster (I think this is OK in a remedial context in the hands of a competent person - i.e. not me).
I now have a granny gear and I fully intend to let my grandad-like body make full and frequent use of it. We don't really have hills round here (my recent 20 mile test rides only ascend/descend by around 1000ft) but I will be a bit more confident to have a go should I ever get fit enough to be able to ride as far as the nearest significant slope.
Anyway, lesson learned: if in doubt, don't. I do want to learn to do basic jobs though. I just need to start with the very basic stuff.
