Out on my spare road bike today (just a moment ago) while my other bike is being worked on (see separate thread) and the rear derailleur decides it want to hit the spokes and be gobbled up into the back wheel.

My bad, I know full well to check there is no contact.

The mech hanger did snap, but managed to pull some of the steel frame hanger with it (should bend back OK)

I was stranded up a hill, and had to be back in the office within an hour. I tried to call a colleague to rescue me but there was no phone signal!

I managed to get the mech off and turn the bike into a single speed, albeit with a very loose chain.

I just made it back in time for my call, which was duly cancelled anyway.

Rear campag mech is toast, back wheel is toast, frame is OK.

Twas an old bike but a good spare in good working order, or perhaps not.

Happened to me on a cold wet Saturday morning last January. Hanger broke, destroyed my rear mech. Luckily wheel was ok so shortened the chain and turned it into single speed for the journey home.

Funnily enough I'd just collected the bike from the LBS the day before where they fitted new inner and outer cables for me. I reckon they mis-adjusted the limit screws as I'd not had a problem previously. Unfortunately I had no way of proving that this is what caused the issue so didn't bother raising it with them. In hindsight I wished I'd have just took it straight back to them rather than going home and ordering replacement parts.
