Without getting your calculators out first - which of these has the highest speed at the tip ?

10" bench saw 3800 rpm tip speed 113 mph
90m wind turbine, 26 rpm = tip speed 275mph

they seem very graceful but that tip speed s fast

They are impressive bits of kit.
26rpm is pretty quick for a large wind turbine. Does the UK have any on shore turbines with 90m blades?
Abd they won’t be reaching that speed often. for most of their operating time they will be running much slower.

thats what it says for the ones I was near
https://www.thewindpower.net/windfarm_en_22027_barmoor-south-moor.php
I counted 26rpm (used a video to be accurate) other data says they need to operate between 10 and 25 rpm to be efficient ?
so even at (25+10)/2 = 17.5rpm that would still be a whopping 185mph

just looked up biggest offshore the MySE 22MW turbine - 310m dia blade (do you think that is a made up figure, 310m ?) anyway it doe 10rpm and will have a tip speed of 365 mph

i do hope my maths is right with this (someone should double check)

Wait until the Arabs see this list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_powerful_wind_turbines

They'll build a 2km one as soon as they can find the slaves to work on them.

Incredible speed. I also read that each revolution is enough to power a typical UK home for 24 hours.

Just been considering the Dogger Bank turbines, Haliade-X, 220m blade producing 12MW at 8½RPM (100% capacity) each revolution will take 7 seconds or 0.002 hours
0.002 * 12MW = 24kwh per turn
the dogger bank turbines are 60% efficient (average output I think that means?)
so 14.4 kwh per revolution

don't know what UK average house uses, but we use about 12kwh per day - so yes what you suggest does certainly add up

Another fun way to look at that is how hard those things are to turn:
Take ALL the energy your house uses for a day, and that is about the amount you need to turn a wind turbine ONCE!

Some London bollards are upended cannon. This photo was taken in January 2023 when two bollards on Fishmonger’s Hall Wharf were unearthed during road works.

Certainly is! About as quick as a Peregrine Falcon*
*discuss ;-)

Great factoid though, I would have estimated maybe 80mph for the big ones?

On a slight tangent, I was at a place where a man was looking through binoculars at a nearby building. He said he was disappointed as he'd only seen the one, yet he was assured that there was a pair of green falcons nesting there.

Bermuda has no fresh-water springs, rivers or lakes. There is no national mains water system. As a result, Bermudians have traditionally derived their fresh water using whitewashed rainwater roof catchments and associated storage tanks.
