The cold never used to bother me but I feel it now. Just get some really good thermals. Helly Hansen are expensive but excellent. Southern Ocean yachtsmen use them, so they can't be all bad. Most winter cycling gloves are rubbish and overpriced. Get some skiing ones. My Lidl £6 gloves are a whole lot warmer than my Sealskinz £30 ones. OK, they don't keep the rain out, but that usually isn't an issue. Asda thermal socks are great! Lob in a couple of buffs, and you are sorted.

Why shiver and suffer?

It's not wimpitis. I've always felt the cold and I've always been slim, although whilst training for a marathon a few years ago I lost body fat, one dress size and was freezing all the time. The joys of merino baselayers, heated gloves and insoles make cycling bearable at this time of year.

I'm in my 50s too. I find that after about 10 minutes cycling in temperatures below about -2C, my fingers get really cold. At the start of this week had silk gloves with mittens on top and the leading edge of the mittens were coated with a thick layer of frost by the time I arrived, but my fingers were relatively warm - warmer than when I wear gloves anyway.

Feet-wise, I wear Sealskins for most trips in the colder months. I don't use special bike shoes, just trainers, but went for a pair that had a fairly continuous surface without much fabric on view.

I cycle in long bike tights when it's cold, but as a rule of thumb, I've started wearing waterproof overtrousers on top when the temperature is sub-zero (nothing special: £7 from an outdoors shop, lightweight and pack away quite small) to which my wife added elastic loops that go under my trainers. Despite not having any fleecy lining or anything, these overtrousers really keep the chill out, presumably by acting as a wind block and trapping a layer of warm air inside.

The only problem is when you have to do a comfort stop!

In between here and there
recently Ive noticed a change in me...I feel the cold MUCH more than ever before. Especially my hands and feet....on the bike I wear way more than other riders I see out and about and Im still shivering even at pace.

Im 51, Ive lost a bit of weight but nothing to remarkable recently anyway.

Anybody else outhere of a similar age experience such a change?....or have I just caught wimp itis?
Last winter was my first one having started cycling to work properly in the April before. I never ever remember getting cold hands and I recall steaming at traffic lights halfway in to work. My time went up and my speed went down. Between November and March

This year I am around 5 minutes quicker than Jan 2012, I am not sweating anywhere near the same amount and I am getting cold on the minus temp days including really cold hands. Almost the same kit (probably warmer top) same gloves etc.

For the moment I am putting it down to being lighter and fitter due the additonal 7k miles in me.

I have a skinny, fit mate who used to suffer terribly from the cold when he had to slow down to stay with me on winter rides. The only way he could keep warm was to work harder so he'd keep on riding ahead and then ride back to me. He probably covered 25% more distance than me on those rides.
