Since we are tackling cookery on the forum this weekend, this is how I prepare my baked beans...

I buy the cheapest, nastiest own-brand baked beans. It doesn't matter what they taste like because they don't taste like that when I've finished with them ;)!

Tip the beans in a saucepan and add currry powder, chilli powder, paprika, freshly ground black pepper, crushed garlic, and 6 chopped hot chillis including their seeds. Also add marinated olives to taste.

Heat. Eat with a baked sweet potato, cottage cheese, lightly steamed broccoli, cabbage and carrots.

Afterwards, open all the windows in the house...

Oh, by the way, did I mention that I live alone ?

Baked Sweet Potatoes are nice. Do you eat the skins on yours?

Beans?

Knob of butter while cooking makes it all go a bit mushy

or "Disco Beans" - add chilli, tabasco, Lea and Perrins, Balsamic vinegar and black pepper

or a dash of Soy Sauce

or au naturel then served over cheese and under bacon.

Made my own a few times, not bad.

I'm really not a fan of eating them cold

Time to make the house smell nice:laugh:
I just put cheese on mine, never tried putting anything else in, something to try next time.
I did go to a posh cafe in Newark, and the beans tasted abit cinnimany(if thats a word)

Oh yes! Same with conventional baked potatoes. I just give 'em a quick scrub with a stiff nailbrush before cooking them.

I have a very fancy Panasonic microwave which includes a grill and a fan oven and it can bake a large spud to about 95% of the quality of a 'proper' oven-baked one, but taking about 20 minutes instead of over an hour. It's very clever in that it somehow works out how big the spud is and automatically adjusts the cooking time. Small ones get about 17 minutes, big ones about 20, and huge ones about 23 minutes.

As for the beans... I think perhaps I should try being slightly more subtle. Maybe just add the curry powder, garlic and chillis, but not all that stuff at the same time !

Anyone noticed the price of baked beans recently? Yesterday , a small tin of Heinz was 57p in Morrisons. Good job they didn't name the brand 157 varieties!

Blimey, you'd take all the other stuff in the beans but some sweet, innocent cottage cheese turns you off !

Actually, I love 'proper' cheese but when I got fat the first time, I realised that I had to banish certain things from my house. For example, I discovered that I could happily eat 250g of cheese and a whole loaf in one sitting !

So, (having already abandoned meat), out went:
  • Cheese
  • Bread
  • Cake
  • Biscuits
  • Sweets
  • All but one takeaway a week
  • ...

After that my weight dropped from 16 st 5 lbs to 11 st 10 lbs over about a year and I got very fit.

Unfortunately, my weight has been up and down several times since then and I am currently fat again. I didn't go back to pigging out on food, but I still like the beer too much. It's my one remaining vice, and the hardest one to give up. Every now and then I have 6 months or more off and get fit again, but then I give way to temptation and the cycle repeats. With me, it's not so much yo-yo dieting as yo-yo boozing (hic)!

PS Beans on cheese on toast, with chilli flakes sounds yummy! I'd probably sprinkle that with Lea & Perrins.
