Good to hear your going to go for it, it sounds like you're fairly committed to having a shot, so that's the main thing. I'd say the best thing to do is contact a few clubs in your area and see which best suits you. Don't worry about keeping up with the fast guys there are alweays folk willing to take the newbies out. Check your LBS. They possibly offer weekly / monthly rides, geared to all levels of confidence. Mine meet every weekend for an early morning 20/40/50 miler. You soon find your pace and work out which group you're in. If they don't welcome you, go find another group.
