Apparently he had alzheimers, poor bloke, but the media is reporting he slipped away peacefully.
Love him or loathe him, he was a force of nature and the world is a sadder place for his passing.

My FIL knew him through the unions and at conferences
I can imagine it a bit like a pair of butting goats.
We all know the Prestcott character, my FIL was very similar and I guess they clashed.
FiL was exrlrraordinarily stubborn and opinionated. I found it kinda funny that he couldn't stand him.

Completely agree, very sad news, I was huge fan, a completely authentic character and a titan in the Labour Party.

He came to visit us once in his capacity of representing seamen. Was he Union Secretary or something like that?
I praised the skipper and crew of the Lismore ferry who carried bulk containers of malted barley from Oban to Fishnish on Mull as they had missed only one sailing all winter.
He was surprised as he expected only complaints and said he would pass this on to the ferry crew.
Seemed a very decent bloke.

I knew he’d been ill for a while as he had been removed from the House of Lords due to his stroke.
I think the news that Jaguar are dropping their logo probably sent him over.
He was an old fashioned Labour man. Not sure how he would cope in today’s politics, but I’m certain he’d see through the charlatans.

A political giant and a man whose opinions were always worth listening to. I didn't realise he was 86, I seem to have that problem with many people.
