He did later clarify that he felt the egg running down and thought it was blood, hence the jab. Can't really argue with that.

The first thing you think of when you hear his name has got to be the moment when he taught that scruffy egg thrower that actions have consequences, brilliant.

Thought he was a good sport going on top gear as an ex transport minister knowing hes going to get ripped , I doubt many modern day politicians would have the nerve to do that

And of relevance to this forum, JP was architect of the last decent transport policy we had in the UK. With subsequent motorist backlash and hasty retreat by Blair...
He was much under-estimated intellectually

Not a fan of politics or politicians in general, but John Prescott always came across as the type of guy I could have happily gone for a few pints with. Ex merchant navy guy (as was I, briefly), so that gives him kudos in my book. He took no crap (as in the punching incident), and we need more people like that to stand up to attention seeking nobbers. Good man, JP!

I think what stood Prescott apart was his sincerity. No dodging questions or making weak excuses for him - he took ownership of his own actions. Thats almost unheard of now.

Funnily enough ... this morning I saw a clip of him on Top Gear. Defending his policies against Clarkson.

That's what started the argument, but what earned Oisin whatisname a punch was a disparaging remark about Clasrkson's wife having just recently left him. Strangely very few news outlets reported that bit, preferring to stick to the hot meal narrative.

I recall Prescott's Top Gear appearance. He stood up for his beliefs, but ultimately took everuthing in good humour.
