1 mph = about 18" a second. Climbing a hill really really slowly your cadence would not be above 60rpm so one revolution of the cranks a second for that 18".you don't want to be moving forward 5 inches for each pedal revolution and only going at 1 mph
Gear calculator for 48-36-26, 11-34 and cadence of 90 on 700c wheels with 32mm tyres on.
With the 26/34 the gear is 21" long and at 60rpm you do about 3mph.
