How do top-end manufacturers manage to sell ugly glasses with thick plastic frames? When I was a child people who wore glasses like that got the piss taken out of them.
I think it goes something like this:
Famous person wears something stereotypically "ugly" or "nerdy" to try and be different.
Because the famous person is famous and therefore "cool", rich people then buy the same stuff to also look cool.
After a while, affordable brands copy the look so everyday people can buy the ugly stuff and it becomes a highstreet trend.

Can you still get AA map books?
Used to be everywhere for a couple of quid and ideal for redneck touring without being a slave to a phone or Garmin..
