The main reason for this is the M+ rubber is frankly rather low on the grip front when compared to Specialized All Condition Armadillo, Continental SportContacts or even Schwalbe's own Durano+ tyres when riding on fast & technical roads. With that said M+s aren't a race tyre, they're a trekking/touring tyre where reliability rather than performance is the priority so it's no surprise that this is the case.

As for weight, okay they're certainly not feather weight but the quoted weights tend to be for the big tyres, 700x25Cs are shy of 600gms that's 35% more than Specialized All Condition Armadillo at the same size &55% heaver than the Schwalbe Durano + neither of which can hold a candle to the M+ for puncture protection & durability.

Agreed, but Josh rides this to and from school and on a mix of roads, cyclepaths and trails on evening and weekends. I'm not certain on what his next tyres will be but I don't think ones that cut, and absorb sharp bits, are the best choice. Though M+ may be overkill, but I quite like someones else's idea of an M+ on the rear and another tyre on the front.

M+ here too. Old bike had them and did more than 6000 miles without any issues (other than getting them on in the first place!). Glass strewn cycle path every morning.

What a crap day, had the flat this morning then less than two miles my way home the back tyre flattens again...
I have no spare tube as I used it in the morning, I tried to repair the other tube but it was perishing or the shards were weakening it (likely) and run out of glue in the process, cue me being stranded 15 miles from my car, not good.
Managed to get rescued by a work collegue and taken to car (thanks Paul), then I locked myself out of the car and had to ring the wife to fetch my spare keys, twenty minutes drive away.

Anyways getting to the point which tyres are more shard / puncture resistant the Continental Four Seasons or the Continental Gatorskins, I want the protection but not at the expense of rotating mass, oh and I am on 700 /23mm tyres.

Cheers

Maybe you're just looking for too much, I think we'd all love a superfast, super grippy, super lightweight, super comfy, tyre that never punctured. When I was still doing my long commute, 40 miles a day, it was on M+ 700x35 tyres and the bike, before me and panniers, weighed 35lbs. As I got fitter I seemed to plateau at a 15-16mph(I think my first go was about 10mph) average for the trip. More importantly I never suffered a puncture. So I'm cycling for 2.5 to 2.75 hours a day, rolling time was rarely more than 2 minutes different to trip time, only two sets of lights.

I doubt if my tyre choice ever cost me more than 15 minutes a day and the lack of punctures must have saved me a fair bit of time. Plus it made weekend riding seem much easier and more fun.

It's each to their own and what trade off you want to make.

I have Continental Ultra Gatorskins, so far had 2 p*nct*r*s, 1 was a thorn which was already in the tyre when I bought the bike, and 1 was a small shard of glass. I have nearly 700 miles on them, but so far they have seemed to hold up really well.

Now that I've jinxed myself, I will definitely be bringing my pump and spare tubes to school tomorrow!

Went for standard Marathons in the end - didn't like the fitting horror stories associated with the +, also the extra weight.

Thanks for the advice!

Armadillo All Condition PROs - I have these in 23 and 25C on my commuting bike and they have yet to puncture in 3 years. I ride pretty much everyday 25-30 miles a day. On club rides Conti GPs regularly puncture or split but the Armadillos just keep on rollin'.

Or Vittoria Rubino Pros are good as well again no punctures for me, good ride and grip, wet or dry. Can't remember whether mine are 23 or 25C. I think 23C on my road bike and I have another spare 25C set for my commuter when the Armadillos wear out. Got another set of the Rubino Pros as Wiggle were doing them cheap and a voucher made them even more attractive.

Conti travel contact . Been on my mountain bike for nearly a year not a single prob . And when I want to switch to my knobblys ( conti viper ) I use puncture seal pre filled tubes . They work ( also use puncture seal on my motorbikes and it got me out of trouble a few times

I have found the Bontrager race lite hardcase that came with my Trek 7.3FX are very good. They are semi-slick with tread on the sides but low rolling resistance when upright.
I have done abot 2500 miles on them and only had one p*ncture.

Now how did you manage to get hold of these?... I thought Armadillo & Pro were mutually exclusive. Armadillo & Elite however is a different proposition.

You bein' cheeky ;)?

I bought them from Ben Haywards about 2 1/2 years ago.

No, not at all. I went looking for the Armadillo Pro variant of the All Condition & was told they didn't exists, it was Armadillo or Armadillo Elite. ;)
