I bought valve hole inserts for my rims and changed my inner tubes over to presta valves having had some difficulties with schrader valves in the past.
I am a bit concerned about my friend's front wheel. The Presta valve is just inserted through the larger Shrader hole in the rim, without one of those inserts to fill the gap. I worry that the tube might get worn away by contact with the edges of the hole and cause a sudden and dangerous front-wheel decompression. I might buy her a Shrader tube, swap the Presta one out and keep it as a spare.

These twin head pumps have an internal valve that needs to feel some return pressure to activate the correct side. Inflating a completely flat tyre can prove difficult so try putting the pump on an already inflated tyre and giving it a couple of strokes. That should get you ready to inflate the flat tyre no problem. (Assuming both tyres use the same type of valve.)

Specialized tubes (at least I think it's Specialized) have valve rings with a raised ridge, to locate in the Schrader oversized hole.

Schrader valves can be fickle. I bought valve hole inserts for my rims and changed my inner tubes over to presta valves having had some difficulties with schrader valves in the past. It wasn't much fun when an attempt to ad more air to an inner tube resulted in even less air in it when I couldn't get the adapter to seat and depress the valve plunger.

Glad you've resolved the problem.
Presta valves can also be fickle. Sometimes I'll just look at the ones on my touring bike, and then Hey Presta! The valve nut snaps off. Damn things are so fragile .
