Gotta hand it to you guys, the double bouncer BSO is a waste of money and my time. There is more wrong with it than there is right!
So I have purchased this, a good old Raleigh in full working order.

Sorry to hear that. Still, my experience of the Pioneer has been very positive - mine's been a trusty utility bike since about 1989. I replaced the brakes and levers with a set of Deore V-brakes/Shimano rapid fire shifters, which updated the original equipment nicely, for about £40, iirc.

Good choice of bike there, likewise I'd swap to V-brakes and Rapid Fire (7spd) shifters but I'd also swap the handlebars for some aluminium ones and although I prefer 'straights' maybe some riser ones if you want the bars that high (that stem must be about it it's max extension)
Mind you those Pioneers ride nicely as standard.

Picked the pioneer up this morning, it's totally original apart from the tyres, everything works exactly as it should so I am a very happy chappy.
Good stuff!

In general the CC massive knows bikes! The Pioneer will give years of pleasure, PLUS as it's still original thus 'classic' which is just the icing on the cake. Keep it original as long as you can :-)

Gave the bike a bit of a clean and happy to say it is in very good nick given its age, just a few age related scratches on the paintwork but no rust at all apart from the odd bolt . The BB is smooth as are the wheel bearings, the drive train all works as smooth as silk and looks to have very little wear, all in all a nice "classic" in very nice condition. Can someone point me in the direction of a supplier of the frame decals as the existing stickers are very tatty. The frame is 21" hence the saddle being dropped to its lowest point to accommodate my short legs, I do have to slide down off the saddle when I come to a stop but that is not an issue for me.

yebbut, I'm 70yrs old, knackered, short winded with bad knees, I need to get out on a bike more to keep things moving; the technicalities are secondary.

rigid bikes on rough towpaths bugger my joints, esp wrists and elbows. I am not going cross country riding. [do they still do cyclocross? or is it now mountain bikes]

I like the idea of getting out on a bike again, I was keen rider in my youth, but now I am a long way from that.

Bravo, plus one, and hats off to you, sir.

Yeah, fair comment.

Or put another way, it matters not if you are showing nine inches of seatpost or no inches, provided there's adequate stand over clearance.

You might prefer a bit more on the Pioneer, but I'm sure it will do a grand job for its intended pub/canal use.
