Recovery shakes are fairly essential -you need to replace approx 100g carbs and 40 s protein within the first 30 mins after getting off the bike to aid a quicker recovery for next day training.

If you are training so hard and regularly that normal food can not suffice, or indeed be consumed! For the average cyclist, they are far from essential!

Average western diet has more protein in it than the human body can usefully metabolise in muscle building and repair. Protein shakes are far from essential, although they can play a role in weight loss scenarios, as protein has been shown to have greater satiety than carbohydrate.

Unless your diet is low in protein for some reason, shakes are a relatively poor source of it - highly processed. Much better off with real (unprocessed) food.

The main place for supplements is for example at the end of a hard training session or race where you either wont be able to stomach eating or you can not take real food with you IMO.

Some people could benefit in other circumstances but most really are just buying into a load of marketing bollocks.

Agreed; as I can't handle solid food straight away, I usually have a protein shake after a race or very tough training session. Otherwise it's real food for me...nice bit of chicken vs a bizarre tasting protein shake... no contest!
