How? Is the chainring tearing through your socks into your jeans? Tearing into your jeans above your socks?

It's just the oil. I always seem to end up with some on my trousers. I think it tends to happen when I'm standing at lights with one foot clipped in.

I've purposely bought slim fit jeans in a dark colour specifically for cycling to avoid this, though I still wear the others with combinations of tucked into socks/rolled up (both legs) and snap bands.

Unclip the left foot, not the right one. Job done.

Try fitting a chain case or guard - something like a Hebie Chainguard. I've seen a better looking one that also covers the lower chain run and can extend or shorten for different size bikes but I can't find it just now...

On my old commuter, I had a metal chain case/chain guard that was part of the bike (painted to match). Commuted in suit trousers, jeans etc. - never had a problem until the bike died of old age and lack of maintenance.

Give your chain a good clean it shouldn't be dirty! Relube with finishline dry lube. Tuck your leans into your sock as stated previous.

I just tuck my trouserleg into my sock. Or just recently I got a reflective ankle band with 4 little LEDs in it and a velcro fastening - £1 from the pound shop!
