by the by, in case someone thinks he was just an old fogey living in the past.
as i recall he was using a prestel mail account before many folk on here were even vaguely aware (or maybe born) that anything like the internet/beyond pigeon post and licky stamps existed.
google the hack.
I used to go drinking with someone whose wife had more than a fling with someone involved in this drama.

He was an early adopter of environmental concerns, fronting a BBC programme in 1957 in which he spoke of the problems of 'the glaciers melting'.

Then there was the large role he played in founding the World Wildlife Fund in the early 60s.

Anyone who thinks he was an irrelevant old duffer out of sight in a palace is very wide of the mark.

I always felt his more famous quotes in the tabloids were out of context and carefully selected. You can make anyone's great granddad look bad by publishing something they uttered once. It misses all the gems that he's come out with that weren't tabloid worthy.

Here's one from on board the Royal aircraft again: Steward number 1 and steward number 2 are having a conversation about holiday destinations in the galley. Steward 1 tells the other that he highly recommends Greece and that he should “definitely take Liz (steward 2's wife) some time”.

Phillip was passing by the galley having visited the flight deck, and he overheard… popping his head in he said:
“Greece? Liz? ....I think you'll find she's already bloody been!"

Rapier wit.

Shame he didn't make 100. I'm no monarchist, although I'm pretty sure HRH was better than presidents Blair, or Thatcher.
Philip gave offence at time, and I suspect I'd have not 'got on with him'. But he did a job that only had one, short lived, precedent, in Albert. Apart from the odd racist remark sadly not made 'off the record', he did the difficult, almost impossible job really well.

I'm a great admirer of The Queen but Prince Phillip was never my cup of tea, I don't think he was in the same league as Prince Albert.

We watched a couple of the BBC tribute programmes later in the evening and it was very illuminating in to what his role was and what trusts he helped set up .
He served the Queen his wife and this country for over 70 years, no politician would do that . They would be more interested in helping their rich buddies get richer . He was interested in engineering , science and told the heads of British industry what he thought of them ! I think we need a few more people like him who aren't scared to tell people what's what!

Oh I think a lot would like to and I think Vlad will give it a try! Well, not this country unless his plans keep going well!

Most bizarre tribute I've heard is Hunstanton is closing children's play areas for the eight days of mourning.

That will depend on whether the gathering is hijacked by those looking for a punch-up with the police.

Nothing to bite on, that twitter is full of absolute cobblers is hardly contentious.

Telly coverage yesterday from Windsor and Buck House - and from @Blue Hills who pedalled past the latter - indicated there wasn't much of a gathering at either location.

I've not seen anything from today, having now had my media fill of Phil, at least until the funeral.

Some of his quotes.

He said: “If you stay here much longer you will all be slitty-eyed.”

In addition, after being accused of racism for this mark, he appeared to fail at learning his lesson.

And years later in 2002, while speaking to Indigenous Australians, he said: “Do you still throw spears at each other?”

He’s also made many cultural and sexist blunders over the years.

In 2003 he was accused of being disrespectful to the President of Nigeria who was wearing traditional robes.

Prince Philip remarked: “You look like you’re ready for bed!”

And when chatting to a female cadet in 2009, he asked her if she worked in a strip club.

No great loss in my eyes.:okay:

Massive gathering at Sandringham. All police! I've not seen so many since my last visit to London. I don't know what they've heard but they had the road closed and mobile car traps deployed. They invited us to ride through, though :-) 👍🚲✅

Those sort of remarks make me wince too, but I'm not going to criticise someone for simply being of their time.

Actions are more important than words, and the Duke did many, many good things to improve the lot of those less fortunate than himself.
