My nearest sub post office, two counters normally with 2 staff working and a queue "closed. Their signs were that "some Post Office services will be available at the main checkout" - but given they are closing two full-time Post Office counters and always have a queue reality is it's closing.

And I wondered why given how busy it always is and only reason I can think is that they don't make enough money from each transaction to justify staffing and the floor space. I guess it will impact Royal Mail as well as they used it to leave parcels that need signing for (can't deliver) with a significant catchment area.

I only use the Post Office to return some online orders so can't appreciate the impact on others. I assume a lot of Post Office users can have alternatives (buy online, Post person collecting parcels) but do worry about the impacts on eg older pensioners, particularly given how most local branches of banks have closed down.

I hope not, I'd put this above NACA as its a vital service.

I have 3 near me, neither are closing though all three are not dedicated branches. All are either a counter in the building or a sub branch in the building (with actual counters, glass walls etc).

My nearest is really busy to be fair, it's recently changed hands and chatting to the new post master the biggest hurdle to running a post office is still actually the post office! He does a fair amount of parcel trade, I noticed what appeared to be 2 seats wrapped up for delivery and that is literally what they are, he said 2 local lads break cars as a side business and Royal Mail is the cheapest apparently.

Just adding a souce for this as well: 115 Post Offices facing axe - full list of every at risk branch

This is interesting: "The group said it plans to offload 115 directly owned branches within its 11,500 network, which could see them transferred to retail partners or postmasters, or potentially closed.". I'm assuming then the branches are all a dedicated post office building rather than a concession within another building.

I reckon it's of interest to folk without any necessity for it to get political.
I'm sure Nacarites can start their own tantrums about it if they so wish. 😊

NACA is "News, Current affairs and Politics".

It isn't just about politics. Though personally I see no reason this thread should not exist here, I can understand why Alicat thinks it may not be allowed.

I think the majority of those are in places big enough to have multiple Post Offices. I don't know of anywhere that still has a post office in the traditional sense, they're all just counters in shops these days.

Because some people get a vicarious pleasure from stirring the pot rather than having a constructive adult conversation.

It doesn't bother me directly, but I can see it may have an impact on the elderly, vulnerable, and those on a limited income.

I wont go into the reasons - as that would indeed become heavily political on several different fronts - but it's probably been a long time coming for those unspecified reasons.

At the moment at least it seems to be places mainly with alternative PO venues available.

You can now drop off Royal Mail post at many Collectplus drop off points, I did it yesterday in the Esso petrol station on Reckleford in Yeovil. First time I had done it. This will clearly mean the money for taking in parcels will be spread about to many more places making some sites less viable. So now some post offices take in Evri in addition to Royal Mail and Collectplus are now taking Royal Mail in addition to Yodel etc although for the moment its not all collectplus sites. I print my royal mail labels at home and then just drop off at various sites. At the moment I'm mainly using Yodel (£2.69 for a up to 1kg parcel) and Royal Mail with the very occasional Evri parcel, 1 in 100 maybe as their pricing isn't very competitive at the moment I find.
