Is that all acid rain damage from the past ?

Partly, however most of it is damage from the Borkenkäfer or bark beetle in English. In recent years climate change has seen more frequent and intense Winter storms alongside more summer droughts. these events have served to weaken the spruces and leave them open to infestation from the beetle. The hillsides are adorned with the ghostly remains of these trees that have been left standing where they died, this photo from my trip last Autumn shows the dead trees amongst the living on the banks of the reservoir.

I've posted more photos and information in my trip write up from last Autumn here:

Very nice; I'd like to visit the Harz but haven't found a good enough excuse yet. (apparently "there are steam trains" doesn't count).

Were you camping?

It's an intriguing area, lots of run down towns and forest, not at all like you would find in UK national parks. There are some lovely places though like Goslar and other hidden gems, but I'm still not sure if I would make a massive effort to visit if it wasn't on my doorstep. Camping wise, we stayed in the Kapitelsberg Hütte, which is completely unlike any other forest Hütte, it has doors, windows, insulated walls and a secret sleeping room upstairs.

cool truck and rocket. whats the story?

This was taken in the former East German town of Benneckenstein, outside of the museum which houses an eclectic mix of East German curios, from tanks and planes to toys and electronic goods. It's one of those places I would love to look into but has sadly been closed the last two times I was in town. There are some great photos online of the collection and the website is here:

If you're ever near Overloon in NL, I can recommend the WWII museum, started by the locals immediately after the War and grown hugely. There is a vast hall with a huge collection of huge memorabilia (if that's the right term) including tanks and planes.

They were very kind to this bike tourist and put my bike in a secure storeroom but it was winter, such options may not be available in more popular seasons.

ok thanks, just looking at that link too. The other place looked amazing while digging around the website, got loads of amazing hardware. We are cycling through France again this summer and stop off at the Blockhause - https://www.leblockhaus.com/ which ive not been to and La Coupole which I have. https://lacoupole-france.com/

Sounds good they were able to look after your bike, always a problem when touring. In 2016 I wanted to check out Pointe du Hoc, but since last time, it seems to be a "musuem" now, and couldnt leave my bike anywhere without a bike lock and only clipclop shoes on also. So didn't go in. Got lots of WW1 stuff also on our trip soon, not sure what we can get to see of it.

Off to check out your link
