With shimano road pedals and cleats its the yellow ones that have the float.I think its 6 degrees. These are on my road bike and i find the float valuable on long distances.
I am thinking of getting some mtb clipless pedals and shoes for my hybrid(i need to walk a distance so need this set up).Do these have float as well.I was thinking of sticking with the shimano brand.

I use Shimano PD-M520s on the road, they have loads of float, almost too much I'd say. I have the cleats set up pointing dead ahead, and I could pedal with my heels rubbing the cranks if I wanted to, without releasing from the pedal.

Edit: Just realised I said pretty much the same in an earlier post. Also, in case it's not clear, the PD-M520 pedal is an MTB style pedal.

I am not sure whether some cleats determine float - but float is defined by the number of degrees a foot can rotate before it becomes unclipped from the pedal - so normally it would be the pedal that would be described as having degrees float.

No it's the cleats that determine how much float you have. Some cleat types have multiple float options depending on the way they are mounted.

OK set these up and after reading yellowtims links i had it set so the ball of my foot was a few mm forward of the axle center.
i think it was slightly more comfortable, however this is only on a turbo trainer so will have to play around with it
the float on the grey look cleats is 4.5 i think. it seems ok for now, again time will tell. you can get red which is 9d

final, i had to send the shoes back as i just wasn't happy with the fit. have ordered some Diadoras to see how they feel

Different degrees of float apply to road shoe/pedal combinations and are determined by the cleat. This does not apply to MTB pedal/cleat combinations.

ok had my first ever clipless ride today and it was great
set out with my brand new look keo's and diadora sprinter 2s. didn't have to make any emergency clip outs but i'm happy enough, still need to look to put foot back in but that will pass i'm sure.
would like my right foot heel sitting outward a little more so may adjust
but it just gives a lot more confidence especially on hills and standing up. all that pressure goes into the wheel rather than my trainer.
